Goatlab Radio returns after a year of silence! Thank you for all the kind words and pestering emails asking “When are you going to do another radio show?”. This month’s show features a special interview with Coppe’; the “Legendary Godmother of Japanese Electronica”. Coppe’ is on tour at the moment around the UK with the Bit-phalanx label crew. The tour aims to raise money for the Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami relief appeal, and also promote her new remix album “Yoghurt” which features contributions from Minotaur Shock, Kettel, Mrs Jynx, Gareth Clarke, Libythth and former Sneaker Pimp, Kelli Ali … not to mention the talents of the Bit-Phalanx crew, Jilk, T-toe, Fred moTh, Mr O, Martin Phone, Niggle and many more.

Born in Poland, raised in the USA and schooled in Japan, Bogdan finally arrived in Europe via a homeless spell busking on the streets of Tokyo. Wherever he went he was always creating new music and in '99 he was signed to Richard D James' Rephlex Records. He went on to produce a slew of groundbreaking records for the lable including a collaboration with Bjork in 2005 and several critically aclaimed albums and EPs. His live shows are incomparable, you will never be the same after witnessing one….

Producers get paired up at random at the start of the night and are entered into head-to-head bouts.
The winners from each battle progress into the next round until 2 producers are left in the final.

The Bash Out Lectures with Dan Gusset and Friends

Dan Pope (aka Gusset) will be presenting an A/V performance of data bent versions of his urban exploring photos alongside a live drone/glitch soundtrack in room three of Bash Out at the Black Swan, Bristol on Sat 20th June (10pm – 6am).

Data bent images are intentionally corrupted digital images where the files have bits altered, cut around, have channels moved or filtered, and are otherwise bastardised to cause all forms of distortions and bizarre effects. Often the results are disappointing fields of black or images that refuse to open at all but persistence and luck can lead to intriguing results.

Like it's close relative circuit bending, where any electronic sound making device, usually a cheap children's toy, is dismantled and its circuitry randomly rewired, it's something that anyone can try. It may just be noise with occasional recognisable hints of what it once was, but there is a beauty to be found in there either by close study or by allowing it to wash over you.

Among the friends Dan has filled the rest of the line-up with will be a Dub Boy & Beavis - Inna Rootstyle, films from public space hijacker and Occasional Cinema organiser Badoni, and beatless soundscapes from Freq.

Living Inside the Speaker (The Bristol Dubstep Scene)

Dubstep is the newest musical genre to come out of the UK and is quietly gaining popularity all other the UK with its heavy, heavy bass lines and spaced out sound. The scene is particularly strong in London, but Bristol is often classed as Dubstep’s second city. This film goes into the underbelly of the Dubstep scene in Bristol and uncovers through interviews with DJ’s, promoters and punters a vibrant and growing scene. The film explains the Dubstep sound and how the Bristol scene started, highlights how producers make Dubstep tunes and plays live Dubstep sets and describes why the sound system is so important to the genre. If you are into underground music and subcultures then you cannot afford to miss this film.

The film features DJ Pinch, Peverelist, Bubonic, Atik2, Hench Crew, Kymatik, Kidkut, Blazey, Stealth, Dub Boy, Wedge, White Boi, Gutterbreaks, Elemental, Search & Destroy, Skream, Chef and the Bristol Dubstep Massive. (including many hijackers)

I recently made a soundtrack and sound effects for a new Playstation 3 game called Savage Moon. It’s a tower defence strategy game available in Europe and USA on the PSN (Playstation Sony Network) download shop. Savage Moon is not currently available in Japan, so I decided to ask a few friends from Japan to remix the soundtrack in the hope that people there might like it enough to want to play the game. HIMURO YOSHITERU has a remarkable ability to sculpt sweet melodies and weave them into intricate beats. He’s based in Tokyo and has had a number of releases on labels such as Troop Records, Couchblip, Zod Records and French label Invitro. Himuro’s first album Nichiyobi was released in 1998 by the UK record label Worm Interface, alongside artists like Tom Jenkinson (Squarpusher) and Freeform. His releases are mostly within the electronic music genres of drum and bass, electronica, hip hop, braindance and IDM, with a significant jazz influence. His style is often described in the media as very playful. It is comprised of finely chopped, fast rhythms in combination with jazzy bass and synthesizer lines and 8bit sounds (like video game music). In this area he is one of the prominent Japanese musicians of this time. Some of his pieces have been featured on John Peel´s Radio show on BBC Radio 1 and one was later released as an mp3 on the Tribute to John Peel Series, as a free download.

Maxim Anokhin was born in the Ukraine in 1988 but moved to the Netherlands at the age of 11. He started making music early and at just 17 he released Changing Crisis, his first EP. Since then Limewax has become one of the biggest names in drum&bass. His distinctive hard sound and unique drum programming have made a huge impact on the changing sound of the music and make his style instantly recognizable. With releases on Tech Itch, Freak, Obscene, Tech Freak, Bastard Child, Avalanche, Algorythm and Sinuous Recordings along with further pressings on his own label, L/B Recordings, a residency at the legendary Therapy Sessions and a worldwide performance schedule Limewax’s influence is sure to continue to grow.

ROTATOR.

Peace Off head honcho Rotator aka Mr Kill is the master of 4 to the floor mashup. Undoubtedly one of the best and most consistent producers in breakcore Rotator’s music is heavily influenced by hardcore and ragga as well as metal, hip-hop and a punk attitude. Incredibly heavy yet infectiously danceable, hundred mile an hour hardcore morphs into fuked up break beats and frenzied amens rattle over ragga samples. Expect an explosive hour of mayhem from France’s finest.

XANOPTICON.

America’s splinter break badman Xanopticon makes complex and terrifying music which defies comparison. Since the turn of the century he’s been shaking dancefloors to their foundations with his industrial and psychotic beat destruction and sinister soundscapes. Xanopticon is not for the faint hearted but those who brave his set will be sure to witness an uncompromising and unusual performance.

PARASITE vs IRONSIDE.

We’ve been lucky enough over the years to be able to draw on some fine local talent to keep the Mongrel dancefloors bouncing. Death$ucker head honcho Parasite is amongst the finest of this Bristol talent and he never disappoints when behind his laptop. As a top quality producer, record label and online music shop boss he can dig pretty deep and when he’s played for us he’s normally rinsed out a ferocious ragga-jungle/breakcore selection which has had Lakota and The Blue Mountain jumping. Ironside’s eclectic mixes suit the Mongrel sound down to the ground and as a result he’s become a true stalwart- rocking reggae and ragga through dubstep and jungle to hardcore, breakcore and gabba. So this time we’ve pitted the two of them against each other to spur them on to even bigger and better things.

SVENGALI & PORKCHOP.

The Mongrel soundboys will churn out the finest in drum&bass, jungle and breakcore just like we’ve been doing since we kicked things off in Jan ’06.

So with the main room lineup looking heavier than Godzilla we’ve gone all dubbed out goodness in room two.

ANDY SCHOLES.

Andy Scholes has been making roots reggae and dub since 1990 and has established himself as one of Bristol’s finest producer’s in those genres. He has an impressive back catalogue of releases and a truely enviable list of collaborations and contributors to his many projects including Horace Andy, Preddi, Prince Green, Stryker Dread, Ras Zebbi, Dallas, Donette Forte, Steve Harper, Johnny Clark, Willy Williams, Tony Tuff, Daddy Ants, Ghardian, Carosene Oil, Pacey, Leroy Gibbons, Ragga Twins, 3PM, UB40 and Izyah Davis. Andy’s been hard at work in the studio of late so expect some exclusive dubs for this show.

Reggae, Ragga, Dancehall and Dubstep will all be represented in this room with sets from some familiar Mongrel faces and some new ones. THINKING, SKYLION, TOKIN MAN DEM and DJ TELE all on board to rock the upstairs.

And after the success of the third room styles on NYE we welcome back the theme of the unashamed djs for the wee room. Once again we haven’t filled our quota for this section so if you’re keen to come and play and don’t mind ruining your cred send I a pm and we’ll see if we can squeeze you in.

Lighting and visuals will be provided by the Blunderphonics boys again after a fine display for us on NYE. This time, with both Matt and Will on board, we’ve been promised even more.

WEFT Records - New netlabel from Gusset

I've stared a net label. WEFT Records.

"Two sets of thread or yarn make up a piece of woven fabric. During the weaving process the warp threads are stretched from the back to the front of the loom. The weft threads are inserted across the loom at right angles to the warp; the weft threads going under and over the warp threads."

Already available for download are two old Gusset EPs, Silencio and Skidmark, and the great new Housewarming EP by Jilk. And lovely it is too. Just the thing when you are kicking through the 5mm of snow.

More releases are planned. Demos are welcome, please email odd tracks or, if you have a whole EP, a link to gusset at gmail.

In particular I'm looking for tracks for a compilation of world music influenced electronic music. If you have anything that fits that please let me know.

If you'd not heard, dubstep is pretty big in Bristol and not the city's newest music scene gets a bit of a national big-up as Radio 1's Mary-Anne Hobbs explores the scene!

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has its roots in London's early 2000s UK garage scene. It is distinguished by its dark mood, sparse rhythms, and emphasis on bass.

Gein, a trio of producers formed in early 2004, have become hugely popular amongst those who like their music dark and brutal. Named after the notorious psycho Ed Gein who spread fear through America in the ‘50s Gein are now terrorizing dancefloors the world over with their twisted brand of drum&bass. Welcomed into the Freak Recs/Therapy family they make hard, heavy dnb with complex drums patterns and tortured bass lines. Gein have a dark and intense sound which is making an impact the world over.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of witnessing a Jahba live set then you’ve got a treat in store. A highly nonconformist producer and a controversial personality within the US jungle/breakcore scene Jahba is about as far away from conventional as is imaginable. His sets take in widely different genres and emotions- furious, musical, angry, epic, funny and insane. He likes to call his brand of music Gonzo Junglizm and when we had him over in August last year he made it one of our best shows with an incredibly entertaining set and, as he lurched about the stage, cigarette holder in hand, there was definitely a touch of the Hunter S Thomson about him.

Lynn Standafer aka END.USER is a cornerstone of both the international breakcore and drum and bass scenes. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio but now living in San Francisco he is a prolific and versatile producer who straddles genres, borrowing styles and samples from anywhere and everywhere. His drum programming is second to none and he finds a way to combine intensely musical works and haunting melodies with blistering jungle and apocalyptic breakcore beats. Enduser has released work on Ad Noiseam, Peace Off, Outbreak, Hymen and too many more to mention. He has had support from, amongst others, BBC Radio's Mary Anne Hobbs and has played at festivals and events the world over. His 2008 album 'Left' on Ohm Resistance showcases his talent and versatility but is largely focussed on the dark and intense drum and bass style which is all his own. This is an artist at the top of his game and his live sets are something to behold. We are very, very excited to have him at Mongrel.

Bristol’s own PARASITE is best known for helming the consistently great Death$ucker label which boasts the scene's best and most eclectic roster- with releases from Bong-Ra, knifehandchop, Krumble, Monkey Steak, d'kat, and DJ Ripley. He's also the head honcho of DSWAT, one of the most active online mail-order stores, and was, of course, a driving force behind the best night Bristol has ever seen- Toxic Dancehall (RIP)- and the Goatlab that has risen from its ashes.

RAXYOR is a New York producer on tour in Europe over the autumn. He's booked to play alongside all the breakcore greats at festivals and club nights across the continent including Bangface 60 in London. Although surprisingly little known on these shores he is well respected in the industry and will surely make a big mark on breakcore in the future. Unfortunate ad placement. An animated spinning figure, fairy sparks flying, disappears into the washing machine k-hole with the message "Indulge your senses", in the middle of an article about the dangers of ketamine.

Horse tranqs are a bit of a leftfield choice for even the most seasoned drug user. Most people stay well clear of it. But it does seem to be the drug of choice at breakcore nights. The Croft often complained about Goatlab attracting too many drug users and not enough drinkers. K heads usually lead to an ambulance being called rather than the police, so you'd think little difference for the venue, except that they didn't make any money on the drugs in the first place as they would have done with the booze.

There was a guy thrown out of the December Goatlab who collapsed on the pavement and was eventually taken to the hospital. He checked himself out as soon as he could and by 3am was trying to get back into the venue. Much as I don't partake in anything like this and do not encourage it, I'll never have it said that our fans are not hardcore.

Eastern Promises

Bristol is to get a flavour of Eastern Europe - but not the stereotypes of Cossack dancing, vodka or Stalin-memorabilia - this is an invasion by the post-Cold War generation; doing their own thing, their own way; which involves lots and lots of noise. In June local party-throwers GoatLab, is hosting two of Eastern Europe top DJs, one of whom has his UK debut here in Bristol. Anton Nikolajewitsch Gromov, or just Gromov to his fans and Trippmatic are from Russia and Poland respectively. Gromov, a purveyor of musical forms from breakbeat oriented electronic music to bone-crushing drill n' bass has already established a strong reputation for powerful live performances from all over Europe from Moscow to St. Petersburg, from Berlin to Oslo prompting one review to describe his performance glowingly as, "..a vodka-soaked breakbeat massacre!"

Playing alongside is Wroclaw based Polish DJ and producer Tippmatic. He's been organising gigs and playing at virtually every breakcore gig in his native Poland for the last two years and met Bristol breakcore producer Parasite when he invited him over for a mini-tour last year. Now Parasite is returning the hospitality and we all get to hear the results of this East-meets-West mashup. Local acts War Against Sleep (with a psychedelic audio-visual feast with a goaty twist!) and Michael J Rocks (of the Bath based 1manarmy collective) join Bristol breakcore suprememo Parasite and others for a bilateral breakcore Eastern Block party.

Where do you make noise?

This is the Bristol contingent of the Gusset studio. My bandmate Spokesy has a separate set-up in London, with work transferred between us as Adobe Audition sessions on an ftp site. In the photo you can see my desktop, my live laptop, a Spirit FolioSX mixing desk, a Dave Smith Instruments' Evolver desktop analogue/digital hybrid monosynth, a Alesis Photo X25 Midi controller keyboard and I/O and Absolute Zero monitors. Out of shot there is an old cinema poweramp salvaged from an Odeon refit and a couple of guitars. The cupboard to the left if full of other junk like old guitar effects, electronic toys for circuit bending (should I ever get around to it), contact mics, etc.

You can hear this lot in action at the next Goatlab at the Croft on June 20th. I'm also playing in room 3 at Bash Out at the Black Swan on June 14th although I think that is going to primarily a spoken word set (not that I've written it yet).

We'd love to see what other producers set-ups look like. Please post yours here if you have access or mail it to us if you'd like to see it up here. Hopefully we can build an archive of all of the Bristol Breakcore producer's workspaces, which should be interesting.

Seven piece ska/funk band THE HATS have been all over Bristol, playing sell out shows at Mr. Wolf's and even having a part in the recent series of Skins on Chanel 4.

You may have seen BLACKSMITH stickers around the city, you may have not. But if you like your down-tempo honest hip-hop, you'll love this guys. Playing alongside up and coming beat master and turntablist, DJ FRENIC.

GECKO is part of the inspiring Access to Music College that Bristol is so famous for. With fast paced raps layered on top of heavy beats, to slow spoken word over acoustic guitar, Gecko wont disappoint.

FIZZY MILK are a four piece ska/punk bands, self titled "dairycore" rockers have played with the likes of The Wurzles and Surfin' Turnips.

Plus before, after and inbetween all live bands, DRSS&STRANGEWAYZ SOUND SYSTEM's Marie, or Little Miss DJ will be spinning ska/reggae/jungle classics for your ears delight.

After all the live bands, the MASHUP party can start! With hour long sets from LIFE4LAND's Hardcordion legend Ed Cox, 1MANARMY's Defazed and Headphobe, plus a DEATH$UCKER battle featuring GUSSET and HOONBOY. Also MASHUP resident Seven from buy.want.need.more records will be playing a something a lot harder than you might be used to.

Binray started out with a traditional analogue plus Atari setup thru a guitar amp in a cow shed in Devon, cutting up breaks and various plants as well as attacking kitchenware and farm machinery. After a stint of djing electronics and drum'n'bass around Bristol, he dropped out of the beatmatching loop, and spent a year away from the UK. Things got exciting upon his return, giving up his freedom and buying a proper computer in 2000 .Tuning into the interweb frequencies he got sucked into the code and playful chaos vortex areas of sound. Binray applies a nondiscrimatory policy to all sound, everything can be recycled and used however rubbish it might seem at first. A favourite moment is when highly ordered synthetic strucures are broken apart releasing energy and, as in explosive chemicals, (an earlier interest)."

Gusset (Death$ucker)
Gusset have been scaring friends and punters alike since 1996, unleashing aural assaults at breakcore, techno and hip-hop nights around the city. Not to mention anywhere else that will have them, from Brighton to Madrid. They don't fit comfortably into any nice little pigeon hole and have a sound all of their own, but strangely no imitators. After a promising but stalled start as a low-fi Amiga 1200 toting indie band that made Portishead sound like the theme from My Little Pony, they regrouped and concentrated on a purely electronic offering. Their break came in 2002 when Death$ucker head-honcho Parasite booked them to support Fanny and Venetian Snares on board the good ship Thekla (the floating venue brought to Bristol by Vivian Stanshall as the Old Verity Showboat). Since then they have jumped at the opportunity to support any act their name sounds funny next to. They have a new CD coming out in November 2007 on Death$ucker Records with a bunch of their new tracks and remixes by Planet Mu's Shitmat and The Teknoist, Cock Rock Disco's Jason Forrest, Manchester's king of mash-up Hoonboy, V/Vm's hardoff (aka M-Pi), Parasite and Zod's Binray.

In and Out of YouTube II: A Brief History of Electronic Music

Following Anarchist606’s post about the plethora of rare video footage, charting the history of popular music, that can be found on YouTube, I thought it might be interesting to try to cover the history of electronic music in the same way. This is not intended to be in any way comrehesive, I know there are huge chunks missing, so please feel free to add more if you have more patients than me.

Now, the oldest electronic instrument I can find any footage of is, of course, the Theremin, invented in 1917 by Leon Theremin and still used to this day:

A rash of other early electronic instruments appeared throughout the 1920s and and ‘30s, and disappeared again just as quickly. It wasn’t until Pierre Schaeffer’s invention of the tape recorder in 1939 that the first major school of electronic music took shape.

1940s - Musique Concrète

Some of the pioneers of this technique of creating music from recordings of natural sounds through layering and tape splicing are presented here:

1940 – Vocoder invented by Homer Dudley.

Demonstration on vintage (1978) Sennheiser VSM-201 shows what it does:

1952: RCA Synthesiser Mks I & II invented. No footage found from this period but see later section on the Radiophonic Workshop. The ring modulator also appeared around this time, see Dalek voices.

1953: Greek architect turned composer Iannis Xenakis writes Metastasis, using statistical techniques to create music. Another pioneer of music controlled or composed through computing techniques.

1956 – The Forbidden Planet, with “Electronic Tonalities”* by Louis and Bebe Barron. Pioneers of snuff audio, using circuits build to feedback and go into oscillation they recorded the sound of the electronics dying, so none of these sounds could ever be created identically twice.
(* It was intentionally not called music in an attempt to avoid playing musician union fees.)

Varèse/ Xénakis/Le Corbusier - poeme électronique (1958) [stick with it!]

1963 – The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, founded by Daphne Oram in 1958, experimented with musique concreté through it’s early years. It came to mainstream attention when Ron Grainger’s Dr Who theme is arranged and rendered out of tape loops by Delia Derbyshire, the first lady of electronica.

Stockhausen was another important pioneer of experimental music, working music Musique Concreté in the early days and then all sorts of other strange things later on. Like the Helicopter String Quartet:

1979: The first digital sampler, the Fairlight CMI is produced.

1981: Brian Eno & David Byrne – America is Waiting, from Life in the Bush of Ghosts, so far ahead of its time it’s scary.

1982: Peter Gabriel and Fairlight CMI, bringing in a “new-wave of electronic skiffle”

Curtis Roads founds the Computer Music Association in 1980 and edits the Computer Music Journal for 23 years. Fluxon (2003)

The 80s were synth-pop tastic, and I could include so much here, but most of it will already be so familiar it’s not really worth it. As a token example, here’s Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder - Together In Electric Dreams. For more Moroder see the soundtracks from Midnight Express, American Gigolo, Flashdance, The Never Ending Story, Thief of Hearts, Electric Dreams, Cat People and Scarface.

Then there’s all the New Order, Madchester stuff. You know all that. So let’s skip to 1989. Where there is disquiet in a field in Kent.

ATR were the band that introduced me to breakcore and I would suggest, a hugely influential band on lots of producers of breakcore. This video is a real punk-rock ironic moment – ATR on a float bashing out tracks like 'Revolution Action' and 'Start the Riot' when a riot starts! It's less 'I predict a riot' and more 'I'm in the middle of a fucking riot!' The German riot cops wear green overalls, so they look for like the military attempting a coup than protect and serve.

I love this video and I love this track. The best representation of breakcore in a music video I have scene, it captures the music perfecly and IMHO its a million miles better that 99% of the pop-video dross that the industry churns out day-after-day.
